2024

Hey there, fans of Japan and comic enthusiasts! Today is a new year! 2024 to be exact. And this year I’m NOT starting off with any New Year’s resolutions. How’s that for a twist? That doesn’t mean I don’t want to get a lot done this year. I’m just going to go about doing it different than I normally do.

“We Don’t Need No Stinking Resolutions”

2024 - A map to the future. AI generated
Some AI art to start the year! But something is off. I can’t quite put my finger on what.

‘Cuz you see, usually, I kick off the year with a burst of energy, thinking, “This year is the one! If I work my butt off, I’ll conquer the world (or at least get past square one).” I then kick into overdrive and work at 110% for 6 months, but come mid-year, that enthusiasm dwindles as all the effort I put in doesn’t result in any changes, and I end the year utterly exhausted. After two decades of that manic rollercoaster, I’ve decided to slow things down a bit. I need a new system of attack.

One thing that I’ve realized during my little break from comics over the past month, I’ve come to the realization that I can’t stop creating. That’s not an option. It’s in my blood. However, I need to figure out a system where I can get results that I’m happy with. So, in 2024, I’m taking a different approach. Instead of creating, I’m going to focus on connecting. Things like meeting other creators, showcasing the work I’ve already done, and generally fostering a creative community vibe.

Things in the Pipeline

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not abandoning the drawing board altogether. I’ve got some exciting projects in the pipeline, and I’m eager to share them with you:

1. Simulation Theory

Drawn by Darryl Knickrehm

There’s just one issue left to draw, and unless a meteor strikes (or something else gets in the way of production), I’m committed to delivering the final chapter. Brace yourselves for a mind-bending experience!

1. The Space Between

2024 plans. Drawing by Darryl Knickrehm

This is a passion project I’ve been nurturing for a few years—a cosmic horror(ish) tale set in a hard sci-fi world. I’ve already drawn the first two issues, and my goal is to complete the final two this year. Oh, and I might need to brainstorm a new title since it seems someone beat me to the punch with a comic titled “The Space Between.” Creative minds think alike, right?

3. The Immortal

2024 plans. Drawing by Darryl Knickrehm

Hold onto your hats because I’m planning to release a physical edition of the first issue. Plus, I’m planning on giving the second issue a facelift like I did the first and aiming for a late-year release. Get ready for a double dose of immortality!

The Biggest “Project”

But my most significant “project” this year isn’t a comic. It’s a new addition to my family arriving in March! Yep, you heard it right—I’m going to be a parent! Again! So, while I’m excited about my creative endeavors, I’m fully aware that parenthood might throw a curveball or two my way. Flexibility is the name of the game.

Enjoy 2024

Because you know what? Life is too short to not enjoy your time on this little planet. And I’ve come to the realization that sacrificing everything (like I’ve been doing) to be an artist has been the wrong way to get what I want. It hasn’t really propelled me forward (I’m still at square one) and I haven’t been having fun in the meantime. So, this year, I’m prioritizing enjoyment. I want to relish every moment, whether it’s drawing a comic panel, connecting with fellow creators, or experiencing the chaos and beauty of parenthood.

So, here’s to a year of creativity, meaningful connections, and, of course, the unpredictable adventure of parenthood. Let’s make 2024 a chapter worth remembering, both in the panels of our comics and the canvas of our lives. Cheers to the journey ahead!

*I don’t use AI for my artwork. These filler images are just for fun and aren’t meant to represent my art so they have been labeled “AI GENERATED.” I want my blog to be enjoyable for you but I don’t have 2-6 hours to draw each image (this blog is done in my free time). If you’re against AI in art, please direct your criticism elsewhere (maybe someone trying to pass off AI generated images as their art). I am not doing that.
